6 Reasons Why You Need a Toner in Your Skincare Regimen

When we talk about skincare and getting a smoother, glowing and blemish-free skin, the conversation is never complete without the mention of a skincare regimen.

Your skincare regimen consists of different skincare products you need to apply to your skin every day to help give you the skin you desire. They are more like your skin daily essentials.

One of such product is the toner.

So, today, we will be talking about toners and why you need to spend your money on buying one. Without wasting time, let’s get started.

What is a toner?

A toner is a liquid skincare product that is applied after cleansing your skin and before moisturizing your skin. It helps to hydrate the skin and remove impurities from the skin.

It is easily absorbed into the skin and it usually contains acids, glycerin, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories.

Reasons why you need a toner?

Toner provides your skin with a lot of benefits that keep your skin smooth and glowing. Let’s take a look at some of those benefits.

  1. It cleanses your skin

I know it is typical to apply a toner just after you have used your facial cleanser or beauty soap. Even though it is not a cleanser, a toner helps to remove excess residue from your skin.

It serves as an extra cleansing step and helps to remove dirt and impurities that your cleanser did not. Even though cleansers do a great job cleaning, they sometimes leave behind makeup residue.

Also, it helps to remove excess oil from your skin. Excess oil is one of the major factors that cause acne in the skin. Why? They clog your skin pores which leads to the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, etc.

If you have an oily or acne-prone skin, then a toner that contains salicylic acid or glycolic acid will be a good choice for you.

  1. It balances the pH level of your skin

This is the benefit of a toner that most people are aware of.

Toners are formulated to help restore the pH (potential hydrogen) balance of your skin. Your pH levels indicate the acidity level of your skin and it is measured on a scale of 0 – 14

Normally, the optimal pH of your skin is 7 but this balance can be affected by a cleanser.

So, your toner steps in and restores balance so your skin does not become too dry or too oily after you wash your face. You enjoy a “normal” skin throughout the day.

This also gives your skin a smoother and glowy appearance.

  1. It detoxifies your skin

There are a lot of toxins that come in contact with our skin every single day and they affect the health and the appearance of the skin. Most of these toxins are from environmental pollution.

Your toner helps to get rid of such toxins, for example, smoke, smog and other chemical residues on your skin.

Not only does this keep your skin in a healthy state, it also helps to reduce the appearance of acne, scarring and aging signs in the long run.

  1. It hydrates your skin

This depends on the kind of toner you buy. Most toners that are produced nowadays are more water-based so they provide your skin with a hydrating effect.

However, if you get a toner with high levels of alcohol, it will not hydrate your skin.

A toner hydrates your skin by binding moisture into your skin. They basically act as humectants. You should, however, note that they do not take away the need for moisturizers.

Moisturizers provide your skin with more moisture than a toner does. After all, the job of a moisturizer is to moisturize.

  1. It prepares your skin for the application of other skincare products

If you are familiar with the daily skincare routine, you would know that there are other skincare products you need to apply to your face after the toner.

What the toner does is that it prepares your skin for the application of these products. How?

Firstly, as I said earlier, it helps to remove dead skin cells, dirt, oil, and makeup residue left on your skin after cleansing. These impurities act as a barrier for proper absorption of skincare products. But once they are gone, these products can be easily absorbed into the skin.

Also, toner hydrates your skin, making it wet. Just as it is easier for a sponge to absorb more soap when it is wet, so also is it easier for your skin to absorb more skincare products when it is wet.

  1. It tightens your skin pores

The problem with large pores is that they give room for more oil, dirt, and toxins to enter the skin and cause infections and irritations.

A toner tightens your skin pores which give room for fewer oils, dirt, and toxins to penetrate into the skin. This gives your skin a cleaner, fresher and less oily appearance as well as prevents the occurrence of acne.

In conclusion,

A toner provides your skin with a lot of benefits.

If you do not have one yet, what are you waiting for? If you want to enjoy these benefits, then you need to apply a toner to your skin every day.

In the long run, you develop an even skin tone, smooth and clearer skin, and blemish-free skin.
