Stretch marks are lines on the surface of your skin that are slightly discoloured.
At the initial stage, they take on a pale colour but after a while, they become silvery lines on your skin. Stretch marks could appear on your upper arms, breasts, stomach and thighs.
Stretch marks are a kind of scars on the body. However, they do not mean that something is wrong with your health.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Most people believe that only women can have stretch marks and that it occurs only after pregnancy. These beliefs are wrong. Men can also have stretch marks and many other factors can cause stretch marks apart from pregnancy.
Stretch marks can occur when you suddenly gain or lose weight.
Stretch marks begin from the middle layer of your skin. When you gain weight, the connective tissue in your dermis is expanded beyond normal. When it is stretched beyond its limits, collagen in your body becomes weak and causes lines to appear.
Stretch marks are also caused by hormonal changes. This explains why most pregnant women end up with stretch marks.
Also, a child undergoing puberty might have stretch marks marks because of the hormonal changes too.
Men are not left out. For men that gym a lot, they have the tendency of having stretch marks on their arms. This is because of muscle growth and expansion.
How to Remove Stretch Marks
To be sincere, it takes a long time for stretch marks to heal, especially if they are gone past the initial stage. But there are things you could to ensure that you skin is flawless again.
1. Try as Much as Possible to Prevent It
This might sound impossible but it can be done.
For weight loss and gain, it might not be easy because they come unexpectedly.
But for puberty and pregnancy, since stretch marks are to be expected, it is easier to prevent. Instead of trying out these tips after they have occurred, why not try them out before stretch marks surface.
Also, treating stretch marks at the early stages makes healing easier and faster. So immediately, you notice those pink or purple lines, do something about them quickly.
2. Consider Clinical Options
Stretch marks take a long while to heal using just home remedies. This is why it is advisable to go see your doctor. Your doctor would determine what medical treatment is best to treat the marks.
Light and laser therapies are good clinical options. The marks are treated with a pulse dye laser. This is effective for red marks. It might not work on old marks. Truth is, it is easier to prevent scarring than to erase the marks completely.
With microdermabrasion, the topmost layer of your skin is removed by blowing crystals into your skin. With the old skin layer gone, a new one comes on. This is a much more effective solution.
3. Keep Your Skin Hydrated
Stretch marks are from the inside out. This means that they are caused within the body system even though they appear on the surface of your skin. So, you have to take care of it both inside and outside your skin.
Keeping your skin hydrated is the key.
You might want to make use of moisturizers. They help to keep your skin moist and hydrated.
But most importantly, drinking a lot of water is perfect for hydrating your skin. It is advisable that men take up to 3 liters of water daily. While for women, 2.5 liters is okay.
When your skin is properly hydrated, your skin cells are strengthened and able to withstand sudden expansion or construction.

What we eat greatly affects our skin.
Eating the right meals help to reduce the visibility of these marks. You should eat food rich in vitamins, fatty acids, antioxidants and minerals. Eating good food helps to treat the marks from within.
