How to Get Rid of Dark Knees and Elbows Very Quickly

No one ever dreams of having dark elbows and knees.

Not only are dark knees and elbows unpleasant to look at, but they also put a dent to the glowing skin we all thrive to achieve.

However, you can get rid of dark knees and elbows very quickly.

But before we go into discussing the different ways to get rid of them, let’s examine the causes of dark elbows and knees.

Why do I have dark elbows and knees?

Several factors can cause dark knees and elbows. They include:

1. Gene

Genetics is a major factor that causes dark knees and elbows.

Some people inherit genes that make them prone to having dark spots on their skin — knees and elbows inclusive.

2. Dry skin

When your skin is constantly stripped off its natural oils, your skin cells decay at a rapid rate.

This can lead to numerous dead skin cells on your skin surface, and in turn lead to the formation of dark skin patches.

3. Dirt and excess oil

Dirt is a significant factor that causes dark elbows and knees. It might be that you do not entirely wash off the dirt from your body.

Dirt can build up over time and can be absorbed into your skin cells. This makes the affected area darker.

Other causes include:

  • Certain birth control pills
  • Specific skin diseases like eczema or psoriasis
  • Dark spots that appear during pregnancy
  • The buildup of dead skin cells
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Hyperpigmentation of the skin caused by exposing your skin to the sun.

How to get rid of dark elbows and knees

The good news is: you can get rid of dark elbows and knees, not partially, but entirely.

Below are some ways to make your dark elbows lighter:

1. Sugar and olive oil mix

This mix is a natural scrub that will help to remove dead skin cells from your skin and allow the growth of new and healthy skin cells.

Sugar is a natural exfoliator while the emollient properties in olive oil help to moisturize your skin.

Ingredients:

  • Two tablespoons of sugar
  • One tablespoon of olive oil

How to apply:

  • Mix both ingredients and use the mix on your elbows and knees
  • Gently scrub your skin with the mix for 2 minutes and then let it sit for about 30 minutes
  • Wash off the mix with a cleanser and warm water

Do this three times weekly.

2. Potato

Potatoes do not only make delicious meals; they are also good for your skin.

Potatoes contain a skin-lightening enzyme called catecholate. This makes it a natural bleaching agent, and therefore suitable for lightening dark knees and elbows.

Ingredients:

  • ½ tuber of potato

How to apply:

  • Cut the potato into thin slices and rub the slices over your knees and elbows for a few minutes
  • Do not wash off immediately. Wait for 30 minutes before washing off with warm water.

Do this daily.

3. Honey and apple cider vinegar mix

Apple cider vinegar contains alpha hydroxy acid, which helps to exfoliate dead skin cells, clear your skin of dirt or anything that can clog your skin pores, and also improve your skin texture.

Ingredients:

  • Two tablespoons of honey
  • One tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

How to apply:

  • Mix both ingredients and apply the mix to your knees and elbows
  • Let it sit for about 30 minutes and wash off with water.

Do this daily

4. Lemon juice, honey, and sugar mix

This mix is not only a natural scrub; it also has skin lightening properties.

The combination of sugar and honey is used to exfoliate your skin and remove dead skin cells. Lemon juice has skin lightening properties, and this makes it great for treating dark knees and elbows.

Ingredients:

  • One tablespoon of honey
  • One tablespoon of sugar
  • One lemon

How to apply:

  • Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice out.
  • Add the sugar and honey to it and mix well.
  • Gently scrub your knees and elbows with this mix.
  • Leave it for about 30 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.

Do this thrice weekly.

5. Baking soda

Baking soda has both skin-lightening and exfoliating properties.

It removes dead skin cells from your skin and promotes the growth of new skin cells, which will reveal a clear skin with lighter skin tone.

Ingredients:

  • Three tablespoons of baking soda
  • Few drops of water (enough to form a paste)

How to apply:

  • Add water to 3 tablespoons of baking soda and mix till it forms a paste.
  • Apply the paste on your elbows and knees and gently scrub it in for about 2 minutes.
  • Leave the paste for another 20 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water.

Do this twice weekly.

6. Aloe vera

Aloe vera contains aloin, a compound that reduces pigmentation. Simply put, it reduces the rate at which your skin gets dark.

Ingredients:

  • Two tablespoons of aloe vera gel.

How to apply:

  • Extract 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel from a fresh aloe vera leaf
  • Apply the gel on your elbows and knees.
  • Let it sit for about 30 minutes before washing off with water.

Do this daily.

In conclusion…

Dark knees and elbows are easier to treat than you might think. It’s about simply following any of the easy remedies discussed here. Just make sure to be consistent with whatever option you pick.

You might decide to use a skin lightening cream or medication, but make sure you speak to your dermatologist first, so you do not cause more harm to your skin ignorantly.
