What is a face serum and why is it necessary for glowing skin?

Often times, I hear women mistake moisturizers for serums. Just because they have a moisturizer, they feel that they do not need a serum.

The truth is if you do not have a face serum as part of your skincare routine, your skin is missing out on a lot. Agreed, a face serum hydrates your skin just as a moisturizer does, but it does way more than that.

You will be learning how a face serum benefits your skin and why it is necessary for glowing skin. Just keep on reading.

What is a face serum?

A face serum is a lightweight moisturizer that contains a very high concentration of active ingredients. They are usually not as thick as moisturizers. This makes it very easy for them to penetrate your skin and work more effectively.

Some of the active ingredients contained in face serums include Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, retinol, anti-inflammatory ingredients like aloe-vera, etc.

Because of their effectiveness, they are used to manage skincare problems like acne, wrinkles, etc. Also, serums come in different formulas. Your serum could be a gel, oil, light cream, or liquid-based etc.

Often, a serum hydrates your skin more effectively than a moisturizer does. The molecules in the serum easily penetrate the skin and hydrate it on the deepest level while creams, especially the heavy ones, sit on the top layer of your skin.

Why is a face serum necessary for glowing skin?

  1. Serums are very effective

Like I said earlier, serums contain a very high concentration of active ingredients, and they work faster than other products in your skincare routine.

According to Stylecaster, serums contain up to 70% active ingredients while your cleanser and moisturizers contain between 5 to 10% of active ingredients.

So, whatever skin problem you are buying it for, whether to even your skin tone, brighten your skin, firm your skin, reduce your fine lines, get rid of dark spots, it will work quickly and effectively.

  1. It is good for acne-prone skin

Serums easily penetrate into your skin. Unlike moisturizers, they do not stay on top of our skin. They get absorbed almost instantly.

If you have an oily skin, it is best you stay away from serums that are oil-based. But, even the oil-based serums get easily absorbed too and do not clog your skin pores.

Since they absorb almost instantly, there is no residue left behind on your skin that can cause acne.

  1. It makes your skin less oily

Many people who have oily skin do not like to moisturize because by the time the sun comes out, their face becomes an oily mess and spoils their makeup.

But then, when you do not moisturize, your skin is dry and your skin produces more sebum (natural oil), which ends up making your skin oilier than normal.

The good news is, you have serum which is far lighter than moisturizer and less greasy. So, they keep your skin hydrated without making it greasy in any way. And since your skin is hydrated, your skin does not overproduce sebum which makes your skin less oily during the day.

  1. It reduces the sign of fatigue on your skin

After spending a long day at work, we come back home tired. The bad thing is that fatigue also affect the skin, making it look dull and increasing the appearance of aging sign.

But with a face serum, you can prevent that.

If after every long day, you apply face serum before you go to bed, you wake up with your skin smooth and glowing like it did not go through stress the previous day. Why?

The active ingredients in the serum promote the regeneration and repair of your skin cells while you sleep.

  1. They work for skincare problems

This is probably the best benefit that the serum offers your skin.

Since it is made with active ingredients, you can use it to treat specific skin problems. You can get an anti-aging serum to help treat aging signs like wrinkles, or an anti-acne serum that helps to battle whiteheads, blackheads, etc. on your skin.

So, not only is it hydrating your skin and keeping it glowing, it removes specific skin blemishes from your skin to give you smooth, clear and glowing skin

  1. It can be used for exfoliating your skin

Before you say anything, I know that serums are liquid and do not have rough particles like scrubs. However, there are chemical exfoliants you can use to exfoliate your skin instead of using scrubs.

Serums contain ingredients like AHAs and BHAs, for example, malic acid and lactic acid which can be used to remove dead skin cells and dirt residue from your skin, thereby giving it a smoother feel and a more even appearance.

How to use a serum?

Now that you know the benefits a serum holds in store for your skin, it’s time to go shopping. But after you do, here is a step-by-step guide to help you apply it correctly.

Apply a pea-sized amount of serum on your skin. Do not rub but pat it evenly over your skin with your finger.

Remember that this is part of your skincare routine. So, you need to apply your cleanser and toner first before you apply your serum and apply your serum before you apply your moisturizer, so nothing blocks it from penetrating your skin.

In conclusion,

If you do not have a serum yet, then you should get one immediately. It should be a part of your daily skincare routine. The truth is, your skin needs it!

If you have any questions or suggestions, leave a comment and I would answer as soon as I can. Have a lovely week.
