Well, we couldn’t continue with her. My dream had always been to create a single product that can control and remove acne and also erase the dark spots from acne.
Many suppliers have told us that it was impossible, but I’d always known deep in my heart that it’s very possible.
Why was I so stubborn?
It started with a soap I stumbled upon during my battle with acne (pimples, whiteheads, rashes, and other blemishes).
After losing almost everything to acne – from my social life to my self esteem and even to some relationships – I found an Asian soap that gave me the miracle I’d been seeking for years. It was called the BioAqua Horse Oil Soap.

All the while I was using myself as the lab rat for my experiments. Lol.
My skin was the one that suffered the most in all of this. Kept going from break outs to clear skin and it remained a cycle.
The problem?
One of the awesome people I met during this period is a woman from Ghana who really impressed us. She was a student-mentor of the world-famous organic skincare formulation trainers, Formula Botanica.
Despite all this knowledge, she decided to specialize in African Black Soap as a supplier/wholesaler. Her black soaps are being bought in huge batches from all over the world.
When we told her how we’d suffered in the hands of Nigerian organic skincare suppliers of products and ingredients, she could relate.
She said when she started her skincare journey, she traveled to Nigeria several times to come and learn organic skincare formulation, but she soon realized that everybody was just teaching and making the same nonsense. And that was why she decided to go international – same decision we made that took us to Formula Botanica and other international groups online.
She then revealed the truth about the Nigerian and even African organic skincare industry to us (because even after learning elsewhere, she kept sourcing her ingredients from Nigeria).

Those who sell locally-sourced ingredients like black soap, shea butter, camwood, etc. don’t follow a regulated and consistent process. And that’s because the Nigerian organic industry is largely unregulated – no government body regulates the industry, so anything goes.
We experienced it too. You go to the same supplier three times and each time you get a different color and texture of product.
In advanced countries, if you make shea butter for example, you must have a certification for your product that shows that it has been lab-tested and given approval by the body in charge. Same with EVERY single ingredient and product.
In fact, manufacturers will ask for your product’s certification before they buy from you.
Who is keeping the local locust bean woman in Nigeria that accountable? Nobody! So she can do whatever she likes with her product and not focus on quality.
And for the Nigerian suppliers selling foreign-sourced ingredients and raw materials that are not produced here, like Sweet Almond Oil for example, they simply source the cheaper, lower quality versions of this product.
For example, instead of buying a European ingredient from where it is made in Europe, they buy it from China – especially where they have no certifications too. So, a product that has a yellow or light green consistency is having a deep green color on the shelves of a Nigerian supplier.
Unfortunately, poor ingredients can only create poor products.
This is why sometimes you use an organic product and it works and then you buy again from the same person and it doesn’t work – or you even start reacting to the product. It happened even with our own products and customers.
I remember a time I followed our first partner to buy raw black soap from a new supplier at “Irefin-Olose” in Ibadan, we were amazed to see how whitish the raw black soap was looking, instead of the usual brown or black or dark-grey we usually saw. Guess what? The next time we went there, we didn’t get anything like that. We had to buy a light-brownish colour.
When we did survey for customers of our first proprietary product, most of the people who claimed were happy with our product came from that particular batch of raw black soap that looked white and clean.
So it means that we wouldn’t have had so much complaints if we always got that version of raw black soap.
The ingredients industry is unregulated.
NAFDAC only focuses on manufactured end products; nobody is regulating the raw materials in the industry.
So our Ghanaian friend (now partner) gave us one simple advice; stop sourcing your raw materials and ingredients from Nigeria!

After going through all this experience, I realized that the problem I (and most other people) have isn’t that organic products don’t work, but actually with the quality of the products here in Nigeria – which is largely influenced by the ingredients and raw materials they are made with.
I decided to bear the cost and start ordering ALL our ingredients from companies abroad who have certifications by recognized bodies.
Unfortunately, this makes us incur some serious costs in the production of our products. But if that’s the permanent solution to the problem of product quality, and if it helps me and my customers solve our skin problems, then it’s fine by me.

Finding the perfect solution started when my husband, our co-founder, was talking about marketing on two international skincare groups on Facebook, using our story, and also complaining of how product was our problem.
Before he knew it, dozens of people (skincare entrepreneurs majorly) from around the world were in his DM and comments asking him to teach them our marketing strategy that helped us to sell multiple thousands of soaps and moisturizers even on low budget and also build our email list to almost 35k women.
Some of these people also offered to help us with our products problem.
But the simple question my husband kept asking them was: “is it possible for there to be a single product that cures acne and also removes dark spots without bleaching?”
Once the person says NO, or starts saying “errrrmmm...it should be possible”, or “we can try” or starts advising us against our goal, my husband cut them off.
He replied only the people who said it was possible, and then we paid more attention to people who claimed that they already had such products.
We ended up collaborating with 2 of them.
The first person is a man from the US.
He slid into my husband’s DM saying that if we could help him with his marketing, he’d be happy to help us with our products.
Straight up, my husband asked him the infamous question: “is it possible to have just one product that can remove acne and dark spots”.
His answer blew our mind off. He said “I’m actually in the process of patenting a product that does just that!”
WHATTTT?!!
It was the confidence for me.
Before we knew it, he already started talking about the product.
We had to explain to him that we aren’t in the US but in Nigeria, so he might not be able to supply us.
Then he said since we are not in the same market, we can be each other’s secret weapon: We give him our marketing strategy while he gives us his formula.
Woah! My husband said ‘Yes’ sharp sharp.
It was our 2021 new year gift!
He got on a Zoom call with us where he taught and showed us everything about the product – what it does and how to make it. For each ingredient, he even gave us alternatives, so that we have choice.
He even invited his wife to the call: She was over 50 and has no single wrinkle, spot (or even stretchmarks, according to him) and her skin tone was very even – in fact, perfect. She was looking 40 and so beautiful.

Steps of faith…

To avoid melting or liquefying like before however, we decided on making ours in solid form, as a bar soap, instead of gummy.
We started ordering products and ingredients. Soaps from Ghana, and other ingredients from the US and other parts of the world.
After a few months of learning and researching and testing, we finally settled down for final formulations and we started using the products on ourselves immediately. Gave some to a few friends and family and some past customers too.
Observations…
What we first noticed is that the body butter, even though made with botanical butters and botanical oils, didn’t feel sticky or thick. Then it moisturizes the body powerfully…all day long.
Then your real skin color starts showing up after a few days or weeks. And later, any discoloration (hyperpigmentation, sunburn, dark spots, etc) starts fading.
As for the soap…oohlala…each bath feels like a million-dollar bath as it cleanses your skin deeply. Your skin feels soft and clean. Lathers very well. And NOBODY has reacted to it so far!!
When you combine both…damn you’ll feel like royalty. Every time pimples tries to come out, they just dry off as small as they are within one to two days and they disappear.
I expose myself to the sun a lot and there were specific times my skin usually became darker, but I realized that despite my sun-bathed market runs, my skin didn’t get darker.
I’m no longer threatened by acne again, even when I’m on my period or eat fatty foods, unlike before.

All these made me realize that it wasn’t my fault all these years that we weren’t getting consistent results from our old products, and it was actually because low quality ingredients, raw materials and products are what fill our organic skincare industry and markets.

If an insect bites you, apply shea butter and see what happens. If any part of your body is injured, add shea butter and see the miracle of healing. So how does something that heals also causes injuries? Sure you get my point.
Some people claim it darkens the skin. How can something that protects and repairs the skin barrier darken the skin? Truth is: no matter what product you use, if you expose yourself to too much sun, your skin will darken, unless you use a good sunscreen cream.
