If You Must Use Different Skincare Brands, Here are The Rules

Often times, I get asked, must I buy all my skincare products from the same brand? If I buy from different brands, won’t it spoil my skin?

The truth is no, you do not have to buy all of them from the same brand, and doing this won’t spoil your skin – that is, if you know how to combine your products.

When it comes to skincare, I advise that you have a full regimen. That is, you have your cleanser, moisturizer, toner, eye cream, serum, and sunscreen.

But it is not necessary you get all the same products from the same brand. You can use a cleanser from brand A, a moisturizer from brand B and a toner from brand C.

What matters is finding the product that works best for your skin.

Some brands say that it is better to buy a full skincare line because the ingredients complement each other. While that might be quite true, it doesn’t mean that you can find another brand with the same ingredients and even better ones.

Your skin does not respond to brands. It responds to ingredients.

However……

When it comes to using different skincare brands, there is one thing you must not do:

Before we go ahead to the rules you must follow when using different skincare brands, here is something you need to know first.

Though using different brands is okay, it is not okay to use different brands of the same product at the same time.

This means that if you are using a moisturizer from Brand A, you do not another moisturizer from Brand B at the same time.

If you do so, one moisturizer might counter the effect of the other and make your skin worse than it already is.

If you want to use different brands of moisturizer, wait till one is finished before using the other.

Using different skincare brands is okay only when you are using different brands for different products.

With that being said, let’s go straight to the rules.

If must use different skincare brands, here are some rules to follow:

  1. Know your skin type

This is the first thing you need to do before you go buying different brands of skincare products – actually, before buying any skincare product at all.

Is your skin oily, dry, combination, acne-prone or sensitive?

You have to make sure that despite the brand you are buying, the skincare product is one that suits your skin type. Your skin can get worse if you are using different brands whose products do not suit your skin type.

  1. Know your ingredients

This is even more important.

It might be okay to use different skincare brands but first, you must know your ingredients.

The truth is that there are ingredients that do not work well together. They create a counter effect on your skin and make your skin worse.

For example, Dr. Fransesca Fusco, a dermatologist in New York says layering Vitamin A and Vitamin C on your skin can dry out your skin.

Also, retinol should not be used with AHAs, to avoid irritation.

If you use different products that contain high levels of ingredients like glycolic acid, or apple cider vinegar, it might cause a reaction also.

To avoid these, read the label and be sure which ingredients are in your cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, serum, etc.

Make sure that they are not harmful to your skin. Not all ingredients are safe.

If you are too lazy to read the labels to check out ingredients, it is best to stick to one brand

  1. Start small

If you want to mix products from different brands, start small.

You can start with a cleanser and moisturizer. Watch how they work together if any reactions occur, and how effective the combination is.

When you are sure the mix is good for your skin, you can include a toner, and then, an eye cream, and so on until you have your full regimen.

Don’t go buying all the products at once if you are buying each from a different brand.

  1. Take time to do your research

Many of us go to buy products without learning as much as we can about the brand we are buying from and the products they are selling.

Each skincare line contains products that work exceptionally well, better than the others. If you can select the best product from different brands to fill up your regimen, you create a kick-ass routine.

Just ensure that the ingredients are okay and they do not counter each other.

  1. Know that it’s okay to go for just one brand

The truth is, many people do not have the time to go through the stress of learning about ingredients or doing research every time they need to get a product.

If that is the case, then it is best to stick to a brand you know that is good and you are sure that their products go well with your skin.

It is safer for your skin that way, so you do not mix products that will make your skin worse than it already is.

In conclusion,

Using different brands is totally okay. And buying all your products from the same brand is also okay.

Mixing products, if properly done, gives you a great skincare regimen with the best products for your skin, even better than buying a full skincare line.

But before you decide to do this, be sure that you follow the rules I have given you and if you notice any reaction, stop the combination immediately.

If you have any questions, leave a comment. I am thrilled to hear from you and answer your questions.

Cheers!
