CHAPTER 1: WHAT IS AFRICAN BLACK SOAP?

African Black Soap is a soap that has its origins deeply rooted in West Africa. For generations, indigenous women of Nigeria and Ghana have used African Black soap for beauty purposes.

It is made from locally harvested plants in these regions by women.

In Nigeria, it is commonly known as Ose Dudu, especially among the Yorubas, while the Ghanaians call it the Anago Soap.

However, Africa Black Soap has gone beyond the shores of West Africa and is now used by almost everyone who understands its importance in keeping the skin healthy, spot-free, and glowing.

Its seemingly natural superpowers for the skin are as a result of the ingredients used in making it.

Let’s take a look at these ingredients and how they give the soap the powerful effect it has on the skin.

What Are the Ingredients That Make Black Soap Special?

It will surprise you to know that the ingredients used in making this soap are locally derived; not the usual popular skincare ingredients you find in many skincare products.

The African Black Soap is made from plants like plantain skin, palm tree leaves, cocoa pods, shea tree bark, palm oil, shea butter, all depending on the maker.

1. Plantain peels:

It helps to prevent the appearance of aging signs, heal wounds, relieve skin irritations, prevent skin inflammation, protects your skin from sunburns, etc.

6. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer and a makeup remover. It hydrates your skin while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

It also conditions, cleanses, soothes, and tones the skin.

It serves as a physical barrier to dirt, dust, and other environmental pollutants, thereby reducing the occurrence of skin problems.

NOTE: Not all these ingredients are present in every black soap. They differ depending on the tribe that makes the soap.

In some places, plantain peels are used instead of cocoa pods.

Also, some women use palm oil instead of palm kernel oil. Some people make African Black Soaps without shea butter or coconut oil, and if one is added, the other is usually left out.

These ingredients are great, but what makes the African black soap very unique is the way it is made, how these ingredients are processed to form the soap.

That brings us to our next stop…

How to make the African Black Soap?

The process of making this soap has been kept a closely guarded secret that is only known to the families that make the soap. Not until recently, we didn’t know how to make this soap.

But the truth is, even till now we do not know the exact preparation of the soap.

The real knowledge of making The African Black Soap is handed down by each soap-making family to the next generation, which does well to keep the process secret.

Only the women who make the soap know the complete details. Even most of the DIY trainings do not explicitly explain how to make the soap.

Anyways, here is a quick summary that should give you an idea of how to make the soap:

These women place cocoa pods, plantain peels, palm tree leaves, and sometimes shea tree barks under the sun to dry. Then they put the plants in a pot and roast them until they turn to ash.

The following day, they add palm oil or palm kernel oil (or both) to the ash. Sometimes, they also add coconut oil and shea butter.

These women allow the mixture to cook until it becomes thick. The cooking soap is usually hand-stirred for several hours.

After that, it is left to solidify and harden fully and then, the soap is ready to use.

It seems simple, right? But it actually takes a lot of back-breaking work to make the African Black soap — the traditional and original way.

Here is a video of Yoruba women of Nigeria describing how they make the African Black soap

By now, you should have an idea of what the African Black soap is. But of what use is that information if you do not know if you do not know what the benefits of this wonder soap are?

You’re probably wondering: Is it not just like every other soap? Well, we are about to find out.

CHAPTER 2: BENEFITS OF THE AFRICAN BLACK SOAP

Why is the African Black soap so important? Why should you use it in the first place? We will be answering these questions in this chapter.

Here are some of the numerous benefits of using the African Black Soap:

  • It is suitable for all skin types

It doesn’t matter what your skin type is, you can use the African Black Soap.

It is safe for all skin types, whether normal, dry, oily, sensitive, or combination skin. It is solely from natural and plant sources.

People with sensitive skin do not have to worry about reactions. It does not contain chemicals or synthetic fragrance. So, the possibility of anything irritating your skin or destroying your skin barrier is out of the picture.

It also balances your skin’s natural oil production. It does not strip your skin of its natural oils; neither does it add excess oil to your skin.

If your skin is oily or dry, it helps to make it normal.

By the way, if you do not know your skin type, you are doing your skin great harm. Read this article to identify your skin type and how to care for it: How To Identify And Care For Your Skin Type

  • It doubles as a moisturizer

This sounds strange, right? How can soap be a moisturizer?

Some African Black Soaps are made with shea butter, and sometimes, coconut oil. If your black soap contains these ingredients, it gives your skin a moisturizing effect. Shea butter and coconut oil can help to relieve itching and soothe dry skin.

These oils also lock in moisture, enrich your skin, and keep it hydrated.

  • It helps to soothe irritation

African Black Soap can help to relieve itchiness and other skin irritations that are caused by skin allergies.

It might even help to get rid of rashes, especially those caused by psoriasis or eczema.

Not only does it soothe irritation, but it is also hypoallergenic, that is, it does not irritate your skin or cause any allergic reactions.

If you however want an African Black Soap that is really soothing, find one that has oatmeal added to it.

  • It fights against acne

African Black Soap helps to fight against acne on your skin.

If you have oily skin or acne-prone skin, the African Black Soap can help in reducing the occurrence of acne on your skin.

Since the soap balances the natural oil on your skin, there is no excess oil that will clog your skin and lead to acne.

Also, its microbial properties help it control and fight against the activities of Propionibacterium acnes, a bacteria that causes acne.

  • It is anti-inflammatory

The African Black Soap contains antioxidants like vitamins A and E. These vitamins help to fight against free radicals that damage our skin cells and healthy skin tissues.

These antioxidants also help to soothe inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea, and might prevent flare-ups.

  • It doubles as an exfoliator

The process of exfoliating involves scrubbing off dead skin cells from your skin’s surface. It also removes dust, dirt, and excess oil from your skin pores.

Exfoliation helps to bring out your natural glow.

The African Black Soap has a rough texture, which makes it a great exfoliator. It is a gentle and natural exfoliator that helps to improve your skin’s texture.

  • It contains antifungal properties

African Black Soap is rich in anti-fungal properties, thereby making it a potent antifungal agent.

It helps to battle different types of fungi, such as candida albicans yeast. You can also use it to treat fungal skin infections like toenail fungus, athletes foot, etc.

  • It reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines

Like I mentioned earlier, Black Soap is rich in antioxidants, which help to reduce the appearance of aging signs like wrinkles, fine lines, etc.

Plantain peels and cocoa pods used in making the soap provide your skin with a mix of phenolics and flavonoids that work to fight against free radicals and prevent them from causing damage.

  • It evens your skin tone

A part of your skin can get darker than the remaining parts as a result of skin injuries, acne, skin inflammation, sun damage, etc.

Black Soap is made from cocoa pods which contain tyrosinase activity. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that regulates the production of melanin.

When the enzyme “tyrosinase” malfunctions in your body, it increases the production of melanin, which can lead to discoloured patches on your skin.

Cocoa pod extracts inhibit the activities of tyrosinase and also prevent it from going overboard. This lightens the dark patches on your skin.

The African Black Soap can also absorb ultraviolet rays from the sun. This protects your skin from sun damage and prevents hyperpigmentation and further discolouration.

  • It reduces blemishes and scars

The soap contains such unique ingredients that make it excellent for reducing the appearance of scars caused by burns, diseases, injuries, etc. it also reduces stretch marks and other skin blemishes.

Palm kernel oil, used in making African Black Soap, is rich in fatty acids, which boost the production of new and healthy skin cells.

Also, vitamin E present in palm oil helps to keep your skin and skin cells healthy.

  • It prevents razor bumps after shaving

After shaving or waxing, you need to properly exfoliate to prevent dead skin cells from clogging the hair follicles on your skin. Clogged hair follicles after shaving can lead to causing razor bumps.

The rough texture of African Black Soap makes it great for exfoliating. So, if you use it to wash after, helps to prevent razor bumps or infections that might occur.

Also, the moisture from shea butter in some Black Soaps can help to soothe razor cuts or burns.

  • It can be used as a scalp treatment

African Black soap does not only work for the skin.

It is an excellent remedy for hair issues like dandruff. It helps to remove flaky build-up caused by dandruff on the scalp.

All you need to do is dilute a little amount of the soap with water to let it penetrate to your scalp when washing your hair with it. Now you can see that the African Black Soap holds a lot of benefits for your skin. If you are planning to get the African Black Soap, you are on the right track.

But before you do, there are some things you need to know…which brings us to the next chapter:

CHAPTER 3: HOW TO GET THE BEST FROM YOUR AFRICAN BLACK SOAP

Getting your African Black Soap is a great choice, but more importantly, you need to know what to do to ensure that you get the best from your soap.

How To Identify The Real Black Soap From The Fake Ones

Identifying the real from the fake African Black Soap is very important, and you need this even before you go shopping for yours. Due to the numerous benefits of the soap, the demand for it is high. Because of this, some people make counterfeit brands.

You must know which African Black Soap is original and which one is not

Features of Original Black Soap

original black soap

  • Original Black Soap varies from brownish to a black colour. The colour depends on how the makers prepared it, ingredients they used and how long the plants were boiled or roasted.
  • It is usually very soft and comfortable to mold with your hands. It does not have a definite shape.
  • It has a rough and lumpy texture, and it is sometimes crumbly.
  • It has an earthy smell, and usually no fancy fragrance. However, some brands include essential oils to the soap to give it a nice smell. Natural fragrances from essential oils does not make it fake.
  • It is so soft that it melts quickly if it comes in contact with water.
  • It comes as a soap bar, a paste or in the liquid form

Features of Fake African Black Soap

fake black soap

  • It has an incredibly smooth texture.
  • It usually comes as a soap bar, and it is very hard. This is because harsh alkaline bases like hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, aluminum oxide, etc.are added to the soap to make it solid. These chemicals can cause skin irritations.
  • Some fake soaps are douched with synthetic fragrance.

Note: Natural fragrance oils (essential oils) are okay because they rarely cause negative reactions on the skin.

  • It has a very black colour.

These details should help you pick the right soap for you.

But it doesn’t end there.

Do you know that you can use Black Soap for more than just taking your bath?

If you didn’t, now you do. Keep on reading to find out how.

Different Ways You Can Use the African Black Soap

Some of us are used to using African Black Soap as typical bathing soap, but it can be used for more than that. There are other different ways to use the soap, and they include:

  • Use it as a typical soap bar

To use it to take your bathe like every other standard soap, scoop a little quantity into your hands and knead it into a small ball. Ensure that there are no rough edges, make it smooth.

Then, rub it between your palms with a little quantity of water to form lather and gently apply to your face and every other part of your body.

  • Use it as a body wash

Instead of using it in its solid form, you can make it liquid. just as a body wash.

What you need to do is put the soap in purified water. Wait for a few minutes for it to dissolve and turn liquid. Put it in a container and use as a body wash.

  • Use it as a body scrub

Black Soap naturally has a rough texture so that it can serve as a mild natural exfoliator.

You can decide to use the soap alone to exfoliate.

You can also mix sugar with the soap and scrub your skin with it. This mix makes a good homemade scrub.

NB: When you exfoliate wrongly, you can irritate your skin. For a step-by-step guide on how to exfoliate your skin without causing irritation, please read this article: The Proper Way To Exfoliate.

  • Use it as a face mask

Put little chunks of African Black Soap into a bowl of warm water and let them dissolve.

Add a tablespoon of honey, two tablespoons of baking soda and few drops of your preferred essential oil.

Mix everything together and apply to both your face and neck. Let it sit for a few minutes while it dries. Wash off with warm water afterwards.

  • Use it as a shampoo

Like I mentioned earlier, the African Black Soap can be beneficial to your hair too.

To make a shampoo, pour a huge chunk of African Black soap into a container. Add some warm water into it. Stir and leave it until it is fully dissolved.

Add two tablespoons each of two of your favourite oils for hair, e.g. olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil, etc. Then add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.

Transfer the mix to a dispenser bottle and apply to your hair whenever you want to wash.

You can include your African Black Soap into a huge part of your skincare routine, and if you ask me, I will say you should.

You can decide to use your African Black Soap any way you desire. You will still get the same results.

One of the most popular ways people use the African Black Soap is as a typical bathing soap or face cleanser. But the problem is, if you misuse the soap, you might not get the results you need.

So, I am going to share a step-by-step routine on how to use African Black Soap, mainly to wash your face or bathe with.

Tips on How to Properly Use African Black Soap

how to properly wash your face

You might be wondering: can’t I use it like every other soap? Well, by now, you should know that it is way more beneficial than most beauty soaps.

To get the best out of your black soap, you have to make sure that you are using it right.

Here is how to properly use the African black soap on your skin:

  1. Cut off a small piece of soap and roll it into a ball.
  2. Wet the soap with water and rub it between your palms to create lather. Create just enough to make a light layer on your skin. Too much lather can dry out your skin.
  3. You can use a loofah or washcloth to create the lather, especially when washing your whole body. But for the face, stick to fingertips.
  4. Gently massage the soap into your skin, using your fingertips, a loofah, or a washcloth.
  5. Rinse off the soap with lukewarm water and avoid leaving behind any soapy residue.
  6. Use a towel to dry your skin and apply a moisturizer.

Also note:

  • To avoid any unpleasant feeling, do not leave the soap on your face for a long time. Just apply and rinse off.
  • If using it for the first time, use a tiny bit of the soap on your skin. As your skin gets used to it, increase the quantity.
  • If you are caffeine sensitive, you should do a patch test first. Apply the soap on the part of your arm to see if any reactions occur. (African Black soap is derived from cacao pods which contain caffeine and can be absorbed through your skin.)
  • When African Black Soap is exposed to air, it may develop a thin, white film which looks like mold. However, it is not mold, and you can still use the soap.

With these tips, you are good to go.

However, though the African Black soap works for all skin types, the reaction to it differs based on skin type. All skin types do not react to it the same way.

Let’s take a look at some of the side effects that might occur.

Possible Side Effects to Watch Out for When Using African Black Soap

side effect

Just like everything else in this world, African black soap has its good and bad sides.

But not to worry, it is something you can handle.

For some people, the soap gives them a hydrating effect, while for others, their skin feels dry after using it. This happens because there are numerous recipes used in making the soap, and they may vary with each African Black Soap.

Your initial experience with the soap depends on the particular state of the soap (raw, mixed, manufactured, etc) and brand you are using. It also depends on your skin too.

The first time you use it, and probably for the first week, you might notice that your skin feels tight and dry. This is because the soap is tightening your skin pores and pulling out excess oils and impurities from your skin.

However, after a few days, the soap will balance out the pH level of your skin, and your skin will become/feel normal again. If the Black Soap makes your skin dry, simply use a moisturizer after washing with the soap to deal with the drying effect.

It might also cause a mild burning or tingling sensation. This usually occurs when you have acne on your face. It might also cause redness.

This eventually stops. But try to reduce the quantity you apply on your face. Use a very little chunk to create a lather. Increase the quantity as your face gets used to it.

Also, do not apply the soap directly to your face. Form lather on your palm before applying to your face.

All these occur because it takes a while for our skin to get used to certain new skincare products. But your skin will eventually get used to it, and these initial discomforts will stop.

Hmm….

For a moment there, when you saw side effects, you got a bit skeptical. Right?

Now that it’s all out in the open that there is really nothing to worry about, let’s discuss how you can preserve your African Black Soap.

I am sure you don’t want to spend money on a skincare product and realize you didn’t get the best out of it, just because you didn’t store it properly.

How to Store and Preserve African Black Soap

store african black soap Image credit: walmart.com

How you preserve your African Black soap depends on which type you buy. Like I mentioned earlier, African Black soap can be packaged in liquid form, as a paste, and as a soap bar.

Let’s take them one after the other.

  • Liquid African Black Soaps

The liquid African Black soap usually comes in a plastic or bottle dispenser, which is great because you do not have to worry so much about preservation.

  • African Black soaps packaged as a thick paste in containers

Some black soaps come in airtight containers that require you open, scoop and put the lid back in place. Try not to scoop with wet hands. If water gets inside the container, drain it and open the lid until the soap is dry, before placing the lid back on.

  • African black soap in bar form

But when your African Black soap is packaged as a bar of soap, then you have to be careful how you store it, so it doesn’t melt.

  • If you do not intend to use your African Black soap immediately you get it, do not remove it from the packaging to avoid moisture coming in contact with your soap.
  • Avoid keeping your soap in a wet place where it can easily absorb moisture. This includes inside your bathroom or near the sink.
  • Do not leave your soap in a puddle of water after using it. Your soap will melt before you know it.
  • Keep the bar of soap in an airtight ziplock bag. This way, moisture cannot get to it.
  • Cut off little pieces of the soap for use and return the rest to the ziplock bag. If the piece you have cut out remains, place it on a soap dish, preferably one that has holes underneath to allow water drain out.
  • Cut off little pieces of the soap for use and return the rest to the ziplock bag. If the piece you have cut out remains, place it on a soap dish, preferably one that has holes underneath to allow water drain out.

Also, when exposed to air, your African Black soap will develop a white film on the surface. Even though this doesn’t stop the potency of your soap, it’s not a pleasant sight.

Always remember, the key to making your soap last long without melting is to keep it away from moisture as much as you can.

Whew…

Feel like I need to rest my hands. Lol… But I have to keep on writing. And I am hoping you keep on reading to the end.

We are getting to the part where it gets interesting.

At this point, you practically have all the information you need about African black soap. So, it’s time to go shopping.

5. BeauCrest African Black Soap

Talk about keeping the best for the last!

If you say we are biased in putting our soap in this list (and calling it the best), then you’re probably right.

What you can however be sure of is: that’s not the only reason we are mentioning it here.

The BeauCrest African Black Soap didn’t come from a certified skincare expert; it was a result of someone who’d been frustrated by skin problems (acne especially) and disappointed by several skincare products, who then decided to take matters into her own hands to find a lasting and safe solution for herself — and other women that are like her former self.

After consulting with several skincare experts, brands, botanists, herbal skincare specialists, etc with very strict criterias, the BeauCrest African Black Soap was born.

  • It removes acne, black spots and gives the skin a unique glow
  • It is 100% plant-based — all other ingredients are derived from plants
  • It is suitable for all skin types — normal, dry, oily, sensitive
  • It is suitable for all skin colours — doesn’t bleach nor darken
  • It contains rare antibacterial and antifungal “skin plants” that no other soap contains (benefit of consulting with botanists too!)
  • It does not contain fragrance or any artificial ingredients that might irritate the skin

The BeauCrest African Black soap is indeed your go-to soap for a glowing and blemish-free skin.

It costs 13,000 Naira, which is approximately $35, and comes with a free organic moisturizer as bonus. You can find the soap here.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (AND ANSWERS) ABOUT AFRICAN BLACK SOAP

Question and answer

There are questions I get asked very frequently from the BeauCrest community, especially from people who have tried or intend using the African Black soap.

Some of the questions have been answered in the article; some haven’t.

These questions just might mirror the questions you have about the African Black Soap, and I hope the answers help…

Here are some of the questions:

  • What is the shelf life of the African Black soap?

The African Black soap does not have any expiry date, unlike other inorganic beauty products. You can use it for as long as you want to. Just make sure to follow the guidelines I gave about properly storing your African Black soap.

  • Why does the African Black soap make my skin dry?

I get this question a lot. You remember how I said earlier in this article that the African Black soap balances the pH level of your skin? This helps to control excess oil on your skin.

Your skin feels dry because it is not as oily as usual. This means that your soap is working. There is nothing to worry about.

Just make sure you apply a moisturizer on your skin after using the soap – just like you should after using any beauty soap. (That’s why we give buyers of the BeauCrest African Black Soap a free bottle of our organic moisturizer for every purchase.)

  • What can I add to the African Black Soap to get better skin?

To be candid, there are a lot of ingredients that can be added to raw black soap. Most brands of African Black soap add their ingredients apart from the normal ones.

It all depends on what you want to use it for and the results you want on your skin. So, I cannot give specific ingredients. But I advise you to confirm the ingredients and what they do before you add them to your African Black soap.

However, if what you want is a healthy and youthful skin, the raw African Black soap can give you that. Or just simply purchase from trusted brands that already mixed theirs.

  • How come I have breakouts after using African Black Soap?

I do not get this question all the time, but I feel the need to talk about it.

The breakouts that appear on your skin when you start using African Black soap are not the usual breakouts.

This means that your skin is purging itself of all the dirt, debris, excess oil, and dead skin cells that were formerly clogging your skin pores.

What your soap does is, it speeds up the turnover rate of your skin cells so much that everything clogging your skin pores comes to the surface of your skin.

When this happens, acne begins to form very quickly.

The good news is, the soap also clears the acne. And once it is gone, you don’t have to worry about acne anymore.

To learn more about skin purging, read this article: What is skin purging, and how is it different from breakouts?

  • Can my baby use African Black soap?

The raw African Black soap can be used on children. But be very careful when you are buying the branded soaps.

Like I said earlier, some brands add unique ingredients to boost the elimination of skin blemishes. You need to confirm with the producers if you can use it for your child.

  • Does African Black Soap erase stretch marks?

Black soap can reduce the appearance of stretch marks and make them fade.

How effectively the African Black soap works for your stretch marks depends on your skin type and how old your stretch marks are.

For some people it takes weeks for the stretch marks to fade, some take longer.

For more information about stretch marks, the causes, and how to get rid of them, read this article: Tips to help you erase stretch marks completely.

  • Does African Black soap cause sunburn?

African Black soap does not cause sunburn at all. Instead, it helps to get rid of sunburns.

If your African Black soap is giving you sunburns, it means that an extra ingredient that doesn’t work well with your skin has been added. If this occurs, stop using that brand immediately.

  • Is African Black Soap edible?

Some people think that because it is made from natural plant sources, African black soap is edible.

Personally, I do not advise people to eat African Black soap. I have been told that there is a version of the soap that is edible.

But frankly, I haven’t seen it. To be on the safe side, especially with the numerous brands with different versions of the soap, please do not eat it.

  • How quickly does African Black soap work?

This is practically the first question most of the customers buy.

It all depends on your skin type and how severe your acne or skin blemish is. For some people, it takes days, others weeks, before they see any visible result.

But one thing is sure; you get the clear, spotless, and blemish-free skin you desire.

  • Can African Black Soap be used with any other product?

Yes, African Black soap can be used with other skincare products.

In fact, every woman must have a skincare routine, and a face wash is just one step of out of the seven-step daily skincare routine.

You still have to apply a toner, moisturize, apply eye cream, use a skin treatment serum and apply your sunscreen

However, I do not advise using different brands of the same product. If you are using African Black soap, do not mix it with any other soap or alternate it with any other soap.

Just stick to African Black soap and watch it transform your skin.

  • Does the skin blemish come back if they stop using African Black soap?

The first thing you need to understand is, there are different factors that cause acne, and sometimes, your bad skincare habits might be the reason you have acne in the first place.

Black helps to get rid of acne, and usually when you stop using it, whatever skin blemishes you used it to treat – especially acne, should not back.

However, if you expose your skin to the factors that caused your acne or you continue with harmful skincare practices, there is the tendency that the skin blemish might return.

Here is the reason why your acne keeps coming back. Click on the link to learn why and how to stop it.

  1. Thank you Fadekemi for this wonderful post. I think I’ll go for a natural soap bcos it’s a bit tiring and disappointing when your friends recommend so many soaps and you try them out yet you see no changes. I do want to ask though; the use of african black soap, is it something that has to be continuous?

    1. Well, I believe when something works for you, it’s better to stick with it, even if it has to be a sacrifice.

  2. Also for some of your products, could you incorporate that of students😊. Some of us are not salary earners. Thank you.
