Do you have problems buying moisturizers in Nigeria? Then this mini guide is for you!

When it comes to beauty, it is necessary to put the tiniest detail into consideration.

Whenever you want to get your beauty products, you should consider factors like your skin type, skin tone, price, brand and the likes.

This is because you do not want to buy a beauty product that might affect your skin negatively.

The same goes for moisturizers. Remember it is not just about getting a moisturizer, but about getting the right moisturizer for you.

Do not worry though; I am here to help you through the process of buying the perfect moisturizer for your skin. Simply read this guide for buying moisturizers in Nigeria.

Why Moisturizers?

Basically, moisturizers help to keep your skin moist.

Moisturizers are needed even more during windy seasons like harmattan and dry seasons.

This is because, during this period, it is easy for your skin to get dry and cracked. With moisturizers, your skin has a healthy supply of moisture retained in the body.

This is how it works: Water is easily evaporated from the skin and when it does, your skin becomes dry. What moisturizers do is to trap in moisture in your skin, thereby preventing water from evaporating.

Some moisturizers help to restore lost moisture on the outer layer of the skin.

Whether it is a moisturizing lotion or cream, you can be rest assured that your body gets all the moisture it needs.

Moisturizing lotion or moisturizing cream?

Before you make any decisions to buy moisturizers in Nigeria, you should know that the word “moisturizer” is a broad name. There are moisturizing creams and there are moisturizing lotions.

Though they are all called moisturizers, they have different effects on the skin.

First, you have to understand that the two most important ingredients in moisturizers are oil and water. What makes the difference between lotions and cream is the quantity of water and oil used in the mixture.

Moisturizing creams have more oily content.

They feel greasy when you rub them on your skin. They prevent water from escaping your skin pores by acting as a barrier over your skin.

Moisturizing lotions on the other hand are less oily.

They contain more water and less oil.

Since they are less sticky, they are quickly absorbed into the skin. They do not prevent moisture from escaping your skin pores. Instead, they restore lost moisture to your skin.

However, it is better you use moisturizing creams during the harmattan and dry seasons when your skin gets dry quickly.

When the rainy season comes, moisturizing lotions are the best option.

Also, if you have a naturally dry skin, you could use creams, but if you have an oily skin, moisturizing lotions is your best choice.

What should your moisturizer contain?

Now that you know what kind of moisturizer you need, it’s time to head to a beauty store!

You should however be careful when deciding what particular moisturizing cream or lotion you want to buy.

With every moisturizer you pick, you need to go to the ingredient list.

Every brand would tell you that their product is good. But you can only tell if it is true by checking the items that make up the product.

Here is a list of what to look out for when buying moisturizers in Nigeria:

1. Antioxidants

The major reason why your skin gets dry so easily is because it has been exposed to the sun.

Antioxidants act as a shield. They protect the surface of your skin from the sun. They also shield your skin from unfavourable weather conditions. Basically, they are your skin’s protector.

There are numerous antioxidants. Some of which include: vitamin E, vitamin C, ferulic acid, licorice extract, grape extract, green tea extract, etc.

Remember, your moisturizer should have more than one antioxidant.

2. Stable oils

There are two major stable oils; saturated and monounsaturated oils.

They are called stable because after decomposing, they do not get easily spoilt or develop an unpleasant smell. The longer unstable oils (polyunsaturated oils) stay in a jar, the worse they get.

I guess I don’t need to stress what bad oil does to the skin.

Examples of stable oils include: coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, cocoa butter, marula oil, etc.

3. Preservatives

Preservatives are important, especially if your moisturizer contains water.

If not well preserved, bacteria and mould begins to grow in the moisturizer, and this in turn would cause skin irritation.

Preservatives such as sodium benzoate, ethanol, tea tree, gluconolactone, dehydroacetic acid, etc. are okay.

As long as they are non-toxic synthetics, food grade preservatives, essential oils and derived from plants, they are good to go.

4. Emollients

Emollients are lubricants that soften your skin.

Whether it is thick or not, emollients fill in little gaps within rough skin cells, and this helps to make the skin smooth. Emollients include oils such as fatty acids, borage oil, linoleic oil, sunflower oil, etc.

5. Skin replenishing agent

A moisturizer is useless if it cannot revitalize and hydrate your skin.

This is why it is important to look out for ingredients that help replenish the skin. These ingredients make your skin look soft and smooth. They are a must for every moisturizer.

And they include: ceramides, glycerol, salicylic acid, silicones, alpha hydroxyl, acidsodium PCA, etc.

(Though I’m always wary of silicone though.)

You need to know that there are no specific ingredients that can be tagged the best. But with these, you should be able to have an idea of what to expect in your ideal moisturizer.

What to avoid when buying moisturizers in Nigeria: Fragrance!

It is better to get a moisturizer that has no fragrance. Fragrance might cause skin irritations. Or even allergic reactions.

This is very important if you have a sensitive skin.

If you see ingredients such as: geraniol, cinnamic aldehyde, isoeugenol, eugenol, etc, please run away! They cause fragrance allergies. So avoid them when buying moisturizers in Nigeria.

Mix cream and lotion together? Not sure about that…but why would you want to do that? Do you have a combination skin (one side oily and another side dry)? If I had combination skin, I’d stick to lotion.

  9. Thanks for the post…. Now I know the difference between moisturizing cream and lotion and the skin type to use either.. I have a combination skin and acne prone… I noticed an eczema reaction on my face after face scrubbing… Please what do I do??

  10. This is great. I just started using a aveeno. It’s waw!! Do we have the soap?.

  11. Thanks for this info.I have an oily skin and i naturally become fairer during harmattan with or without skin products but after harmattan, my skin gradually reduce d fairness and am not sure why although I like it .Now,I always have pimples and it hurts to see your body soft and smooth but a rough face .pls I need help because I don’t know which cream/lotion and soap to use .

    1. Hey Eunice, its normal for your complexion to change with the weather. This is because our skins react differently to weather conditions. As for the pimples, it is also normal. The cold winds and extremely dry weather makes your skin cells die faster and the dead cells clog your skin pores which leads to acne.
Have you tried using the Horse Oil Soap? You need it to keep your skin blemish-free especially at this time of the year. If you haven’t tried it, click on the link below. https://www.beaucrest.ng/get-horse-oil-soap-2/

    1. Hi Ukeme, you can pick from the list of moisturizers i gave in the article. They are suitable for all skin types.

  13. Admiring the dedication you put into your website and detailed information you provide. It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same unwanted rehashed information. Fantastic read! I’ve saved your site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.

  14. Good evening, I have a sensitive skin and my skin reacts to virtually all the creams I’ve been using. I used nivea fair but it causes acne on face. I even used silky white no changes Please I need a lightening cream which will not cause acne

    1. Hi there. I had to do a quick research on skin lightening creams. According to the results i got, I recommend that you try out one of these creams.
      1. Truskin Naturals Vitamin C serum
      2. Amara Beauty Vitamin C serum
      3. Acure Brightening Facial Scrub
However, I haven’t tried out these products yet. So, i don’t know how effective they are. I am recommending based on customer reviews. Check them out and see which one you like best.
And please, keep me updated about any change that might occur on your skin. Cheers

  15. Great job on your article.
I currently use Aveeno active naturals, but I discovered that it brightens my face. Now my face is way brighter than other parts of my body. Advice please.

    1. I advise you to stop using the cream immediately. It obviously doesn’t work well with your skin. Try not to use any cream for now.
I advise you to use our African black soap to wash your face for the meantime and watch the changes that will occur. It is made with natural ingredients, not extracts. So, it should work to bring back your normal complexion.
For moisturizing, you can use coconut oil, olive oil or any other natural oil you prefer.

  16. Please can these creams be used on sensitive, acne face? I know they are good on the body. I need a good facial moisturiser please…

    1. Anyone that works for your skin generally will also work for your skin — just might take more time.
You can try our new organic moisturizer. Send us an email or call us if it’s something you’d like to try.

  21. Hi good evening,I have dry skin on my face, what face moisturizer that contains toner can you recommend; Is Palmers cocoa butter very good for dry skin; What bathing soap can you recommend for softer skin

    1. Hi Ezinne,
Personally I prefer to separate the work of a moisturizer from other functions (like toner). I’d rather buy a toner separately. But that’s me. Having said that. I’m not sure I know of such product.

I’ve heard good things about cocoa butter for dry skin. You can simply go through the ingredients list to be sure it would serve the purpose for which you want to buy it. Then check reviews online.

Finally, you can try the BeauCrest African Black Soap; it will definitely make your skin smoother and softer. Learn more about it here: https://www.beaucrest.ng/get-african-black-soap-2/

  22. I really have a bad skin, due to poor handling of acne.now my skin is really bad, rough, very dry and flaky.I am interested in the aveeno moisturizing cream, but I need to hear from others that have used it before,is it good or bad?

  25. Hi, thanks for the article. Please I have an oily face, what moisturizer can I use for my face? Thanks!

    1. You’re welcome, Ese.
You can use the BeauCrest Organic Moisturizer for your oily skin. Contains oils that don’t clog the skin pores — like jojoba oil and grapeseed oil (you can Google them!). This makes it good for both oily and dry skins.

  26. Good day, found this article very interesting and helpful. lve been looking for a way to take care of my skin long before now but don’t really know how to go about it.
During the harmattan period in December, l got one of the moisturizers, organics essential oil. When l started using it for the first few days, it was very good on me to the extent that some of my friends told me my face was smooth and glowing, after a while l discovered my ski g was becoming dried, my palm and foot skin were becoming hard . I was not comfortable with it so l discontinue the use of the oil. What could have gone wrong? Is it that the moisturizer is not good enough for my skin type or l got a game or ?

    1. I can’t say what went wrong because I don’t know the product you used. Maybe the ingredients they added in the oil to make your face smooth has the tendency to dry the skin. I can’t say for sure. It is a good thing you stopped it tho because it obviously does not do well with your skin type.

However, our organic moisturizer helps to keep your skin smooth and soft like a baby’s. And the best part is you can get it for free when you buy our soap, Selina. Click on this link to learn how you can get yours – http://www.beaucrest.ng/get-selina

  27. I am a man, my face is so oily but my body is some how dry. I sweat alot. Which lotion will you advice I used. Thanks
