How to Identify and Care for Your Skin Type

Many women indeed pay careful attention to their skin.

They buy good skincare products, stick to a skincare routine, and follow all skincare rules…

But do you know that doing all these might be in vain if you do not know your skin type?

We all do not have the same skin type, and sadly, some of us are not aware of our skin type.

This is why, this week, we will explore the different skin types, how to identify them, and most importantly, the unique skincare tips for each skin type.

The Different Skin Types

There are five different skin types, namely: normal skin, oily skin, dry skin, combination skin and sensitive skin.

It is important that you read this very carefully. If you can understand the differences, it makes it easier for you to identify your skin type and how best you can take care of it.

1. Normal Skin Type

The word “normal” is used to describe a skin that is well balanced. This means that your skin is not oily or dry. It produces just the right amount of oil and can retain enough water to prevent it from becoming dry.

Some common traits of normal skin include:

  • A normal skin does not easily react to skincare products. It is rarely sensitive to ingredients in skincare products except if they are too harsh or extremely irritating
  • It rarely has blemishes or breakouts
  • It is smooth and velvety
  • Normal skin has normal-sized pores — not large nor too tiny
  • Normal skin is a proof that there is proper blood circulation to your skin

Basically, normal skin is a skin that is healthy and rarely has the common skincare issues that plague other skincare types.

Though this skin type is the holy grail of skin types, it is not common.

Skincare tips for normal skin

  1. Strictly follow a skincare routine. This will help to keep your skin healthy and glowing.
  2. Do not use skincare products with harsh ingredients to avoid damaging your perfect skin.

2. Dry Skin Type

When it comes to dry skin, the main problem is your body’s inability to retain moisture.

This means that the sebaceous glands in your body are not producing enough sebum. When your skin doesn’t have enough sebum in the body, your skin becomes dry.

Also, a dry skin indicates a faulty skin barrier. Your skin barrier is supposed to help retain moisture. When it doesn’t, your skin becomes dry.

Factors that cause dry skin

There are different factors that can make your skin become dry. Most of them are environmental factors. They include:

  • Skin’s exposure to dry and windy weather
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Skin exposure to harsh beauty soaps and detergent
  • Use of skincare products that contain ingredients that irritate the skin
  • Ageing
  • Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun

Some of the traits of a dry skin include

  • Skin patches that can be scaly and flaky
  • Itching
  • Your skin might appear rough or blotchy
  • Chapping, which might cause cracks on your skin
  • Calluses
  • Your skin becomes easily prone to infection and can get inflamed

Note that all these symptoms vary depending on how dry your skin is. For extremely dry skin, the symptoms are severe, and they appear on certain body parts like knees, feet, hand and elbow.

Tips to take care of dry skin:

  • Do not take long baths.
  • Use skincare products that are mild and gentle.
  • Do not scrub your skin while bathing.
  • Use a moisturizing cream. You can also make use of natural oils.
  • Put on gloves when you use detergents or other cleaning agents.

3. Oily Skin Type

This type of skin is the exact opposite of dry skin. While dry skin doesn’t have enough sebum, oily skin has excess sebum. Usually, when hormonal changes occur, it can push your sebaceous glands into overdrive. These glands begin to produce excess sebum.

Factors that can cause oily skin

  • Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, etc.
  • Stress
  • Hot or sunny weather
  • Overdrying your skin which can force your body to produce excess oil

Common traits of oily skin include:

  • Enlarged pores which sometimes can be caused by constant weight gain and weight loss or frequent breakouts.
  • Extra shiny skin.
  • Pimples, blackhead and other skin blemishes. This is as a result of clogged skin pores from the excess oil on your skin.

Tips to take care of oily skin

  • Do not take long baths. Wash only twice daily.
  • Use mild skincare products. Do not scrub or use products with ingredients that can dry out your skin.
  • When acne appears, do not pop, squeeze or pick at it. It will only worsen the symptoms.
  • Do not use comedogenic skincare products. They clog your skin pores.

4. Combination Skin Type

Combination skin, as the name suggests, is a skin that is both oily and dry. It combines the traits of oily skin and dry skin, but on different parts of your face.

Combination skin is the most common among the skin types, but it is not easy to identify and even harder to treat.

If you have combination skin, your T-zone will be oily while other parts of your face like your cheek will be dry. Your T-zone area includes your forehead, nose and chin.

The T-zone area has more active glands than other parts. So, it tends to be oily while other parts are dry.

Traits of combination skin

  • Your cheeks might have either normal or dry skin.
  • The T-zone will be oily with enlarged pores.

Tips to take care of combination skin

  • Use products that contain natural ingredients
  • Apply two moisturizers, an oil-based moisturizer for the dry part of your face and a water-based moisturizer for the T-zone.
  • Exfoliate regularly. Concentrate on your T-zone area.
  • Stay away from products that have fragrance. They can cause skin irritations.

5. Sensitive Skin Type

This skin type is the most delicate of them all.

If you have sensitive skin, it means that your skin gets easily irritated by both skincare products and other environmental factors. It can also exhibit the traits of a combination, dry or oily skin.

Factors that can cause sensitive skin include:

  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Use of products that contain ingredients that can irritate the skin
  • Genetics
  • Underlying skin conditions like rosacea

Traits of sensitive skin:

  • Redness
  • Inflammation
  • Flakiness
  • Stinging sensation
  • Dryness
  • Burning

Tips to take care of sensitive skin

  • Avoid skin care products that contain harsh chemicals which can cause skin irritations
  • Avoid anything that can trigger an allergic reaction.
  • Do a patch test first before using a new skincare product
  • Do not scrub while bathing. Get an exfoliating cream instead of a scrub

In conclusion,

At this point, you should already know the kind of skin that you have. Watch out for the symptoms and follow the skincare tips for your skin type. If you can do this, you will experience an easier skin care journey.

  13. I have a sensitive skin and in one of the tips u main mention do not scrub while bathing.
Does this mean that we can’t use facial scrub or body scrub or u meant not to scrub hard while bathing and also can sensitive skin take lone bath.
    Please i need a Reply.

    1. Hi Blessing,
You can use scrubs whether it is facial or for the body. But just as I said, when applying a srub, be very gentle on your skin. Do not press it hard on your skin at all. The same goes for when you are taking your bath. Rub the sponge gently on your skin.

As for the other question, did you mean a long bath? If yes, long baths are not good for anyone no matter the skin type. 10 minutes in the bathroom is enough to get cleaned up properly.
