Skincare Do’s and Don’ts to Stay Safe from Coronavirus

“Stay safe”

That is probably the most used phrase in the world since the onset of Coronavirus.

Everyone is trying to ensure that they do not get infected by this virus. I want to believe you are taking the necessary precautions to stay safe.

But in the midst of all the commotion, have you realized that some of the skincare rules we have had since ages past can go a long way in also keeping you safe?

Like.. just doing your skincare routine and following your skincare rules keeps you a step farther from the virus.

Before you start racking your brain, trying to figure out which of them can help keep you safe, don’t worry, I will be telling you about them now.

The truth is; some of these tips might not outrightly seem like they can help you stay safe. You probably have taken some for granted. But by the time you are done reading, you would have discovered different ways to keep safe just by sticking to your skincare routine.

Let’s get started

Do’s

What skincare practices should you do this period:

  1. Moisturize

More than ever, it is important that you moisturize your skin, especially your hands.

I am sure you are wondering how applying a moisturizer can help keep you safe from this virus. Yeah, I agree, it doesn’t. But it helps to prevent skincare problems that are triggered by dry skin.

Let me explain.

One of the main precautions we take to stay safe is washing our hands after we have been out, touched public surfaces, etc. – which if we are being sincere is more washing than your hands are used to.

This can cause the skin on your hands to become really dry. It’s worse for people who already have dry skin. This can trigger symptoms like cracking, peeling, redness and scaling of the skin.

And once these occur, washing your hands regularly might become a luxury you can’t afford.

So, to prevent this, moisturize!

And be sure to get a moisturizer that has ingredients with antiviral properties like Tea Tree Oil.

  1. Cleanse your face thoroughly

This is one of the most important rules in skincare and there is no better time to obey this rule than now.

According to WHO, Coronavirus enters your body through your eyes, nose or mouth, which are all on your face.

So, make sure you do not just cleanse your face, but you cleanse it thoroughly.

And this time around, don’t just focus on keeping your skin clean to avoid skin blemishes, but also focus on keeping it clean to stay healthy and virus-free.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can cleanse your face thoroughly => How to Wash Your Face Properly

  1. Drink lots of water

Since forever, skincare experts have screamed the importance of drinking water and the role it plays in keeping your skin healthy.

But drinking water does way more than keeping your skin healthy; it helps to boost your immune system, which is what you need during this period.

Dr. Amin Khan on Aljazeera.com says that people with weakened immune system are often classed as “high risk” of developing complications if ever they succumb to COVID-19.

So, you need your immune system in the best shape, and water helps to flush out harmful toxins from your body. This improves your immune system and its ability to fight off diseases.

  1. Eat healthy

Eating healthy has been one of the sacred rules of skincare.

Vegetables and fruits provide your skin with the nutrients to stay healthy and blemish-free. But this time around, eating healthily seems to be a double blessing.

Still on the gospel of boosting your immune system, one of the ways to do that is to eat a healthy diet. Try to eat a balanced meal as much as you can. Pack in as many nutrients as you can in every meal.

This keeps your body at alert and strong to fight off any virus that attacks it (even though we are hoping it doesn’t get to that).

  1. Stay away from the sun (indoors)

One of the most damaging factors that your skin comes in contact with is the sun. It literally speeds up your skin’s aging process.

The most effective way to reduce exposure to the sun is by staying at home.

Before now, that was almost impossible because we had to go about our daily activities. Now, it is possible since everyone should be practicing social distancing.

At the end of the day, it is a win-win for you. Your skin gets a much-needed break from the sun, and you stay home protected from the virus.

  1. Wash all your makeup brushes and skincare tools

Every lady who has a makeup or skincare kit should ensure that they are cleaned properly.

We are in a period where it’s dangerous to touch your face at all, whether with your hands or makeup brushes.

So, if you must use makeup brushes, wash them first, just so you are sure you are not exposing your face to the virus. And yeah, so that they do not leave dirt on your face that will clog your skin pores and cause acne to pop out eventually.

Remember to clean them after every use too.

  1. Sleep well

I don’t know about you, but I love getting as much rest as I can.

Normally, it is advised that you sleep for between seven to nine hours each night.

When you are asleep, your skin cells go through the process of rejuvenation. Your skin tries to repair any damage that might have occurred during the day.

The best part is, it is not just your skin that enjoys this, your whole body does, including your immune system.

In fact, there is research that shows that a night of poor sleep can reduce your immune cells by as much as 70 percent!

So, treat your self to a good night’s rest, every day.

Now, that you have a list of things you should do, let’s move on to what you should not do during this pandemic period.

Don’ts

Below are things you should abstain from:

  1. Do not touch your face

I think this is one of the most preached preventive measures in reducing the spread of Coronavirus.

If you are a skincare enthusiast, this shouldn’t be a problem, because one of the rules of avoiding acne is to keep your hands to yourself. Your hands have no business on your face.

Now that we know that Coronavirus can enter your body through your nose, eyes and mouth, it is much more important to keep your hands far away from your face.

No rubbing your eyes, picking your nose, or chewing your nails. Hands off!

  1. Do not use makeup except when absolutely necessary

Why skincare experts advise that you stay off makeup is so your skin pores can breathe and to prevent acne from popping up on your skin.

But right now, with this virus in town, it goes way beyond that.

First of all, you are to reduce all contact with your face. During the day, makeup can become messy. If your hands touch your face at that point, and you have come in contact with the virus, it will stick like glue.

The fewer things on your face, the better for you.

Also, during the process of applying makeup, you can be tempted to touch your face, which is also bad now.

In summary, if you do not have any important reason to wear makeup, don’t!

  1. Do not apply skincare products without washing your hands first

I think I don’t need a long story to explain this.

Usually, your skincare routine is to be done after you have taken your bath — which means your hands are clean.

But if you have to apply any skincare product sometime after you have long had your bath, you need to wash your hands first.

You do not need a scientist to tell you that when you apply skincare products on your face with dirty hands, you leave germs behind…and during this period, it just might be a virus.

  1. Do not share skincare products

Finally, we get to the end of the road.

Do not share skincare products. This is just as important as avoiding body contact. Imagine different hands being dipped into your night cream which you will still apply on your face.

Even if you used to share skincare products, now is the time not to.

Bottom line…

Following the most basic skincare rules can go a long way in keeping you safe during this period.

Many of the skincare rules do not just do good to your skin but to your whole body and overall health.

So, make sure you abide by all the safety rules kept in place. And while you are doing that. do not forget your skincare.

But most importantly, stay safe and do not panic!
